NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As the arctic air continues through the night, snow will develop as a low pressure system slides south of the region and is expected to hamper the Tuesday morning commute.

The storm will last through the morning rush making travel for commuters quite treacherous.

Winter storm advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for parts of the region including the five boroughs and Long Island. For areas south of I-195 in New Jersey, Winter Storm Warnings have been issued as they will be a little closer to the center of the storm and get modest amounts of snow. Amounts from the city and points north will get as much as 1-3 inches. Areas south of I-78 and perhaps Long Island may get 3-6 inches. Areas from Philadelphia and points south could get over 8 inches.

The snow is expected to taper off in the city by lunch time on Tuesday and during the afternoon for Long Island. The evening commute may still have some slushy or icy roadways but for the most part will be much easier than the morning.

On Wednesday, another arctic cold front is expected to move in giving the chance for a few scattered snow showers. That may give another coating in spots. More importantly, it will give another surge of arctic air by Thursday.

Temperatures will stay in the teens and single digits are more than likely Thursday night into Friday. Winds will also be whipping around making below 0 feel-like readings likely.
